Description

To use:

Make sure file is named backgroundDefault.jpg and place it in your WindowsSystem32Oobeinfobackgrounds folder.

If you don't have one, you'll need to make one. If you need to make this folder, chances are your computer isn't set to allow custom logon screens. There are some programs that will fix this for you, but as I've never used them, I can't promote them. Google searches can provide you options for this. The other way is to make an edit to your computer's registry.

Press the Start button and go to "Lock" to see it in action. If it isn't working, there's a couple of possible reasons:

  • You have multiple files in that folder, and one of the other ones with a specific dimension is overriding the custom one you want to add. Try moving the others to your desktop temporarily (so you don't delete them forever) and checking to see if that works.
  • This file is the wrong dimension for your screen. Also possible. If you have a photo editing program, resize the logon screen to your computer's resolution and make sure it is less than 256kb in size in order for it to work. Alternately, you can message me and I can make you one, but I come to DA very intermittently so the chances that I'll see your message in a timely fashion are slim.
  • Your computer isn't yet set to allow custom logon screens. See below for how to fix this.
  • Um... that's all I can think of that could go wrong.

ZOMG CAUTION: I cannot be held responsible if, by modifying your registry, your computer blows up, starts the zombie apocalypse, becomes sentient, freezes into a block of ice or does anything other than what computers are normally supposed to do. Tweak your registry at your own risk. I am not tech. You will likely get better results searching Google than asking me for advice with the below instructions.

To allow custom logon screens:
  1. Press start button and type "Regedit" (without quotes) in the search box.
  2. Select "regedit.exe" and press enter.
  3. Tell your computer's user account control that registry editor is allowed to make changes to your computer.
  4. Locate the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE key on the left side of the registry editor, right click, and go to "Find".
  5. Type OEMBackground into the find box, making sure only the "Values" check box is selected.
  6. This will take you automatically to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion Authentication LogonUI Background
  7. Double-click (or right-click, I forget) the OEMBackground value and change it from 0 to 1.
  8. If you don't have an OEMBackground value in the Background key, go to New | DWORD (32-bit) Value) and add it.
  9. Click "Ok" and close the registry editor.

As a side note, this is a relatively safe registry edit so don't let me scare you off. I just have to cover all my bases in case your computer does decide to get up and start making you tea laced with arsenic or something.
